The medieval village of Gruyères stands on a hilltop at the foot of an ancient castle. Small but very pretty town - the capital of the formerly independent Gruyere County. Its name comes from the crane - this bird is decorated with the coat of arms of Count Gruyère Rudolph III.

The main street, framed by charming open-air houses, is being built up to the 11th century castle, which was started by Rudolf III. Crossing the border of the castle, you seem to find yourself in another time. The interior combines different styles. The roof with protruding canopies rises to the castle.

Much of the decor was done by artists from the Bove dynasty. They were invited to visit many artist friends. In the Burgundy Hall, the priceless trophies of the Battle of Morten are kept - the vestments of the knights of the Burgundian Order of the Golden Fleece. Luxurious rooms with antique furniture. In the Corot Hall you will see the artist's paintings. The courtyard is surrounded by buildings and walls from the 18th century.

Gruyeres is famous for its Swiss hard cheese. This cheese originated in the XII century. According to the old tradition, cheese is made only from September to September. From 400 liters of milk, 35 kilograms of cheese is obtained. Gruyere matures 4-8 months and has a fruity, slightly salty taste. This cheese can retain a rich, strong flavor. Tourists are given the opportunity to taste Swiss fondue or raclette dishes and fresh berries with heavy Gruyere cream.

In Gruyères, there is the Giger Museum - the artist who invented "Alien" and created for the film of the same name.
